Click Training for Dogs
- Animal training previously consisted of reward for positive behavior coupled with punishment for negative behavior. While working with dolphins in the 1950s, Skinner could not "punish" underwater and discovered a "click and treat" method worked better.
- Clicker training in dogs is based on teaching the owner to communicate with her pet by rewarding all positive behavior with a click of the clicker followed by a treat. Negative behavior is ignored.
- The advantages of clicker training include improved communication between owner and pet, it is fun for both, it trains the dog to "think," and clicker training is positive, gentle and motivational.
- Clickers emit a distinctive click. Pet owners can use homemade clickers such as a squeaky toy or jar lid, but commercial clickers have the advantage of being small, portable and attachable to clothing or leashes.
- Pet owners can learn to use clicker training with the purchase of a clicker, books and videos. There are also local classes and events.
