    Regular Curtain Rods

    • 1). Choose regular curtain rods for heavy drapes or large windows.

    • 2). Examine your curtains to help you decide where to hang them. Take note of the top of the curtain where they will hang on the rod and also take note of the length of the curtains.

    • 3). Get a friend to help you. Set up a ladder in front of the window and have your friend hold the top of the curtains where you think they should hang. Adjust the placement of the top of the curtains if the curtains do not come all the way down to the bottom of the window casing or if they are dragging on the floor.

    • 4). Make a mark with the pencil at the height for the curtains at the edge of the window casing.

    • 5). Have your friend keep holding up the curtains to determine the width of the curtains in the window. Decide if the curtains should completely cover the width of the window casing or if they should barely cover the window itself. Make two pencil marks, one on each side, for the width of the curtains.

    • 6). Match up the pencil marks to determine where you should install the hardware for hanging your curtains.

    Spring Tension Rods

    • 1). Install a spring tension rod in tiny windows or windows with very lightweight curtains.

    • 2). Measure the length of the curtains only for the spring tension rods. Take note of any other hardware that may be already present in the window, such as blinds. Make sure to install all blinds inside the window casing if you want to use spring tension rods to hang your curtains.

    • 3). Adjust your blind hardware if necessary to make it 2 inches lower than the top of the window casing.

    • 4). Install your spring tension rod above the blind hardware and hang your curtains.
