How to Get Rid of Splinters on Old Wood Floors

    • 1). Use the point of the utility knife to pry up the portion of the splinter that is not attached to the wood below it. If the splinter is entirely unattached to the floor, remove it. Wear eye goggles when when doing this, as prying the splinters could cause them to suddenly snap and shoot toward your face.

    • 2). Clean the underside of the splinter and floor beneath it with an old toothbrush. Glue does not stick well to dirt, so be careful to remove all the dirt that you can.

    • 3). Squeeze some wood glue into the groove left by the splinter. Settle the splinter down into the groove, pressing it firmly into place. Wet a sponge or paper towel so that it is damp, not soaking, and wipe down the area around the repair. Tear off a sheet of wax paper that is large enough to cover the repair. Place the wax paper over the repair and place a heavy object on top of the wax paper. Leave it like this overnight to be sure that the glue fully dries.

    • 4). Sand the repair with fine grit sandpaper to remove any smaller splinters or burs and to even out the surface in case the splinter didn't fully set back to its original position. Stain the repair to match the shade that the rest of your floor has been stained to. Varnish it after the stain is dry to protect it.
