How to Make a Billowy Skirt

  • 1). Billowy skirts can be made with a sewing machine, although it is not required. Sewing by hand is the best option if using delicate fabric or tulle. Delicate or embellished fabrics get caught in sewing machines easily, damaging or pulling the fabric.

Start with approximately 10 yards of fabric and 1 yard of 1-inch-wide ribbon. The ribbon can match the fabric or can be a bright complementary color for a more dramatic look. For a fuller skirt effect, fold the fabric in half to double line it. If you opt for a more fitted skirt, keep the fabric single lined.

  • 2). Wrap the fabric around your waist to form a skirt. Cut the excess fabric off, leaving about 1 foot of extra fabric around the waist. Lay the fabric down on a flat surface. Place the piece of ribbon on the top edge of the fabric to form a waistband. Iron the ribbon first for best results.

  • 3). Use sewing pins to pin the ribbon in place. Leave inches of extra ribbon on both sides of the skirt. This serves as a way to close the skirt around your waist.

  • 4). Hand sew the ribbon in place, sewing both the top and bottom edge of the ribbon. This creates a waistband effect.

  • 5). Wrap the completed skirt around your waist. Tie the sides of the ribbon together in bow, completing your billowy skirt. Pull tightly around your waist to ensure an optimal flare.
