    Bumblebee Birdhouse

    • Make a craft to hang in the backyard and teach a child about ways to recycle at the same time. Make a large hole in the lid of a coffee can and have the child paint the lid black. Use black and yellow model car paint to make stripes all over the coffee can and paint the bottom of the can black as well. Let the paint dry and then seal the paint with an outdoor sealer. Add googly eyes above the hole in the lid and glue a two-inch piece of a thin wooden dowel underneath the hole. Glue pipe cleaner pieces above the eyes for the antennae. Cut wing shapes from pieces of white foam and glue them onto the bumblebee. Make a hole in the coffee can to suspend it from a tree outside and fill it with bird seed. Take the bird feeder outside together, hang it from a tree and watch to see if any birds come to visit.

    Bumblebee Bouquet

    • Make a bumblebee flower holder and then go for a walk to fill the holder with wildflowers. Roll a sheet of black construction paper into a cone shape and glue or tape the paper in place. Cut uneven strips from yellow construction paper and wrap the strips around the cone to make the bumblebee stripes. Make bumblebee wings from another piece of construction paper and add a face and antennae. Let the flower holder dry and then go for a walk together to fill up the bumblebee.

    Bumblebee Cookies

    • Young children can decorate bumblebee shaped cookies with icing and candies, while older children can also help to make and bake the cookies. Make a sugar cookie recipe and roll out the dough. Use a bumblebee-shaped cookie cutter to cut shapes from the dough. Bake the cookies and, once they have cooled, use black and yellow royal icing to decorate the cookies. Use thin pieces of black licorice to make antennae. For a bouquet full of bumblebee cookies to share with friends, insert a thin wooden dowel into each cookie before baking.

    Bumblebee Hanging Ornament

    • Kids can make a simple bumblebee mobile or hanging ornament from cardstock or cardboard and string. Help them to trace the shape of a beehive onto a large piece of cardboard or cardstock. Cut out the shape and color the cutout to look like the beehive. Use a hole punch to make a single hole at the top of the beehive and three holes along the bottom of the hive and thread a piece of string through the hole at the top to hang the ornament. Cut six circular shapes from the cardstock, approximately three inches in diameter each. Draw a bumblebee onto the front and back of each circle. Make a slit through the center of each of the circles and slide one circle onto another circle at a perpendicular angle. Glue a piece of string to the top of the circle and thread the string through one of the holes at the bottom of the beehive. Repeat this step for the remainder of the circles.
