How to Build Cat Stairs
- 1). Measure the distance from the edge of the couch or bed to the floor. You will build two blocks that can be pushed together to form the stairs.
- 2). Mark out the measurements for the legs of the taller stair with a pencil or marker on a piece of two by four. The legs for the taller block should equal the length of your measurement. Use a saw to cut out the legs for the taller block.
The smaller block should have legs half the length of the taller block. Measure and cut out the legs of the smaller stair. - 3). Buy a piece of plywood that is no less than 3/4 inch thick. Decide how wide you want your steps to be and cut out two sheets of plywood with those measurements.
Nail the legs of the shorter stair to the plywood sheet. Place the legs flush with the corners of the plywood. Repeat the process for the larger stair. - 4). Measure the distance from the top of the tall stair to the plywood of the smaller stair. Nail a piece of plywood to the front of the larger stair. Attach a piece of plywood to the front of the smaller stair. These will provide a place to put your carpet.
Check all nails to make sure they are flush with the wood. - 5). Use carpet tacks to attach carpet to the front and top portion of each stair. Push the stairs together for use.
