Halloween, Trick or Treaters, and Dorothy Costume
Halloween became an exciting holiday for kids within the US and Canada. "Trick or Treaters" go from door to door and collect candies, apples and other goodies. Children go in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or sometimes money, with the question, "Trick or treat?" The word "trick" refers to a (mostly idle) "threat" to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given. Most of them wear fictional characters from novels or movies. One of the favorite and most popular costume for this event are from the classic novel of The Wizard Of Oz because there are a lot of Witches in that story and cute Dorothy's costume of the main character. Within many fancy dress events a theme is usually present, and with fancy dress outfits often from Hollywood films such as Star Wars, Grease, James Bond and Spider-Man. Themes are also extremely popular with fundraising events, such as the Great Gorilla Run, where 1,000 people dressed as gorillas in London in aid for Great Gorillas, a charity that focuses on the endangered species.
Halloween originated centuries ago, the Celts believed that on the 31st October the line between the living and the dead became distorted, condemned souls would come back to wreak havoc for the night. In defense the Celts would dress up in ghoulish costumes to scare evil spirits away. Halloween is the holiday when the most candy is sold and it is second only to Christmas in total sales. In some parts of Scotland children still go guising. In this custom the child performs some sort of trick, for example sings a song or tells a ghost story, to earn their treats. The practice of dressing up in costumes and begging door to door for treats on holidays dates back to the Middle Ages and includes Christmas wassailing. Trick-or-treating resembles the late medieval practice of souling, when poor folk would go door to door on Hallowmas (November 1), receiving food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls' Day (November 2). Halloween is not just for kids because The Washington, DC area has some great costume parties for adults (most are for ages 21 and over).
