Plant Cell Models for Science Projects

    Cell Wall

    • The cell membrane on an animal cell is more flexible, while the cells of a plant are quite literally building blocks that make up the actual plant. To that end, a small cardboard box painted green makes a solid exterior wall. There is also an interior wall, which model makers can easily recreate using a plastic zip-lock bag, with the zipper pointed away from the viewer. Fill the bag with karo syrup to suspend all of the organelles of the cell in a membrane.

    Nucleus, Vacuole, Golgi Body

    • Three of the essential parts of a cell are the nucleus, vacuole and Golgi body. Without these three organelles, there isn't much of a cell. To make a vacuole, inflate a balloon to two or three inches in diameter, then sink it into the syrup. A nucleus can be made of modeling clay wrapped in clear plastic wrap. For a Golgi body, which is effectively the brain of the cell, a dried peach works very well.

    Chloroplasts

    Other Organelles

    • The specific plant you are building a model of may have different organelles, depending on the type of plant. Most cells include ribosomes, which you can make by sprinkling large flakes of pepper into the Karo syrup and stirring them in evenly. Some plant cells have mitochondria, which are like cell muscles. These are smaller than chloroplasts, similarly shaped and usually purple. Small blue marbles will make good peroxisomes. There should also be an endoplasmic reticulum around the nucleus, which you can make from folded sheets of construction paper.
