Blogging has been shown to be a beneficial thing for the mental health of new mothers, and there might be evidence that states blogging can be therapeutic to the senior population, as well. When people blog, they are reaching out to a wider audience that can be considered second-family, but more importantly, they are finding an outlet for their emotions and thoughts. Blogging€"the online version of journaling€"has not been around for very long, but it is an extremely popular practice amongst the younger population. This shouldn't dissuade seniors, though. Blogging holds many benefits and it is a pretty easy thing to learn, despite the stereotype that most seniors are adverse to using technology.

When someone blogs, they are opening up about a specific topic, and if that can help relieve stress, then this is definitely a good thing. When seniors blog, they might have additional obstacles, but the hardest thing is going to be learning that they can be open about their thoughts, emotions, and decisions. Blogging is a great tool, when used correctly, and there is a huge untapped resource when it comes to the senior community.

While many seniors are at a distinct disadvantage€"they did not grow up with things like computers and the internet€"this is an obstacle that can easily be overcome. Computers are today more user friendly than ever before and when this fact is taken into account, using the internet is easier than ever, too. If a senior citizen has an opinion€"and who doesn't?€"and wants to share it, the internet is now the easiest and fastest way to do this. With just a little practice, anyone can set up a free blog account and a social media profile and begin sharing their thoughts with the internet community.

If you have an elderly loved one, encourage them to be more open about their emotions and thoughts. Research has shown that this can lead to a healthier lifestyle because of the stress relief that it provides. It doesn't hurt to ask about blogging, either, even if you think they might not want to. Having the option is a great thing and it provides an outlet as well as a way to socially, albeit virtually, interact with others. Science has shown that this mental stimulation improves cognitive functioning and helps to avoid things like dementia and Alzheimer's disease. With the right following/interaction, a blog can be a great way to keep mentally alert and sharpen social skills. All of these things are great tools for seniors trying to stay healthy.

While research has not yet illustrated just how beneficial blogging is to this specific demographic, other areas have shown great results so there is no reason to believe that seniors too will not benefit.
