    • 1). Open the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet containing the cell that you want to change the format.

    • 2). Click the "Home" tab and click the arrow in the right-hand corner of the "Number" group.

    • 3). Click the "Number" tab and click "Number" from the "Category" section.

    • 4). Choose the amount of decimal places using the up and down arrows in the "Decimal Places" section.

    • 5). Check the box labeled "Use 1000 Separator (,)" if you want Excel to automatically format the cell using a comma to separate 1,000.

    • 6). Choose a format for negative numbers and click "OK."
