How to Make Braided Hairbands
- 1). Cut three strips of fabric, lace or ribbon. The strips should be about 36 inches long. You can trim them later if they are too long. The width of the strips should be between a 1/2 inch and 1 1/2 inch. The wider the strips, the wider the headband.
- 2). Sew the three strips together at one end using a sewing machine or a needle and thread. Stack the three fabrics or ribbons one on top of the other before sewing them together.
- 3). Braid the strips into one long braid. Pick up the left strand and cross it over the middle strand. Pick up the right strand and cross it over the new middle strand. Continue until you reach the end of the strands. Knot the them together at the end for a temporary hold.
- 4). Place a dab of hot glue on the end of the plastic headband; the glue should be on the underside. Place the sewn end of the braid on the glue.
- 5). Put a line of glue along the top of the plastic headband. Lay the braid over the glue, pressing it down until it is secure. Sew the braid together just past where the end of the headband falls. Trim off any excess fabric. Put a dot of glue on the underside of the end of the headband to secure the second sewn end of the braid.
- 1). Cut a short piece of elastic, about 5 inches long. This will be fastened between the two ends of the braid so the headband can encircle your head.
- 2). Sew the elastic to the backside of the sewn end of the braid.
- 3). Measure the braid over your head and mark where it ends just under your ear. Cut the braid--on the non-sewn side--at that point.
- 4). Put the braid back over your head. Measure where the elastic meets the braid when it runs behind your neck and up to the fabric behind your ear. Cut the elastic to the measured length minus 1/2 inch.
- 5). Sew the end of the elastic to the new end of the braid. You now have a full-circle headband with the braid and elastic.
