How to Restore Wood Trim
- 1). Sand the wood trim with a 10-grit sanding sponge in preparation for a wood stain. Surface imperfections and blemishes in the surface are smoothed away in the process.
- 2). Stir a can of wood stain with a natural-bristle brush, thoroughly mixing the contents at the bottom of the container as well. Brush a generous coat onto the trim to even out the color, then use a rag to wipe off the excess before it dries.
- 3). Saturate the wood with a sanding sealer, using a new brush. Only a light coat is necessary as the sealer dries quickly. Sand it with a 280-grit sanding sponge until the surface is evenly dulled.
- 4). Apply a polyurethane varnish to complete the finish. Go in the direction of the wood grain, using long strokes with a foam applicator brush or painter's rag. Allow the coat to cure overnight before sanding.
- 5). Smooth the dry varnish with the 280-grit sanding sponge, then apply a second coat in the same method. Repeat the process with one more coat if desired, leaving the topcoat unsanded.
