How to Create a Cardboard Car

    • 1). Reinforce any loose corners of a cardboard box with clear packing tape. Turn the box upside down and draw a large rectangle on the bottom. Be sure the rectangle's edges are about one-half inch away from the edges of the box. Cut out the rectangle.

    • 2). Turn the box so that the longer flaps are on the sides and the short flaps are on the front and back. Cut the flaps from the top of the box except the front flap. Draw a rectangle on the front flap and cut it out to create the windshield. Allow the front flap to stand up and reinforce with tape if necessary.

    • 3). Draw door handles, headlights, taillights and other accessories on the car. Allow the kids to paint the outside of the car and set it aside to dry.

    • 4). Paint four paper plates to create wheels for the car. Paint a steering wheel on another paper plate. Poke small holes in the center of each paper plate wheel and the steering wheel.

    • 5). Staple recycled pantyhose or fabric strips on the inside of the dry cardboard car, one on the right and one on the left side. Bend them into a large loop and secure the end with a stapler. This will create shoulder straps, allowing children to play with the car hands-free.

    • 6). Poke small holes into the sides of the box where the wheels will go. Be sure to poke a hole on the inside of the box just under the front windshield for the steering wheel. Push a metal brad through the center of each wheel and steering wheel. Push the metal brads through the holes in the box and open them up to secure the wheels in place.

    • 7). Check the box to be sure there are no sharp ends of a staple or a brad sticking out. If there are, bend them back into place so a child does not get hurt. Help kids step inside the box and put on the shoulder straps. Allow them to play and enjoy.
