• The oil industry has played a major role in the economic development of the Port Arthur area. Port Arthur is in east Texas across Sabine Lake from Louisiana, and many visitors have ties to the oil companies that still have a significant presence in the area. Other visitors have been drawn to the recreational activities available at Pleasure Island, a long island created in the late 19th and 20th centuries by the Army Corps of Engineers when dredging the Port Arthur Canal and Intracoastal Waterway.

• Full hook-up (20 Amp, 30 Amp, and 50 Amp) pull-through sites are available at Gulf Coast RV Resort off Interstate 10 in neighboring Beaumont. Pets are permitted (with some restrictions) and guest amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV, laundry, playground, and a pool. As of the end of 2009, the rates are $35 per night or $649 per month (including electric).

• The small park of Groves RV Park & Mobile Village (located on the left heading north on Gulfway Drive in Port Arthur about a half-mile before the junction with Parkway Street) offers visitors 46 full hook-up (30 Amp and 50 Amp) sites able to accommodate RV's up to 40 foot in length this park offers. As of 2009, RVs up to 34-feet are charged a daily rate of $30 and a monthly rate of $360. RVs with a length greater than 34-feet are charged $35 per day and $380 per month.

• One mile from The Palms of Pleasure Island Golf Course, Pleasure Island RV Park offers full hook-up sites with a view of the water. Pets are welcome and guest amenities include multiple picnic shelters, two fishing piers, biking and hiking trails, boat launch, bath houses, and a playground.
