How to Apply Fondant Decorations to a Buttercream Cake

    • 1). Place the frosted buttercream cake in the refrigerator for a few hours so the outside can become firm. Wrap a cake board in plastic wrap, and place the fondant decorations on top. Allow the fondant to firm for a few hours before you attempt to apply them to the cake.

    • 2). Attach the frosting tip to the coupler. Fill the pastry bag halfway with buttercream frosting, and screw on the frosting tip.

    • 3). Remove the cake from the refrigerator when you are ready to decorate. Apply a circle of frosting to the back of the fondant decoration to provide suction. For longer decorations such as borders, apply a thin layer for frosting over the back of the decoration.

    • 4). Place the decoration on the cake in the desired position, and hold it there for a few seconds with your hand to adhere. Heavier decorations, such as large flowers, might require a toothpick inserted into the center and down into the cake to make sure that it is stable. Repeat the process with all decorations. Store the cake in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.
