How to Plant Your Wisteria

    • 1). Dig up the soil 2 to 3 feet in diameter and 18 to 24 inches deep. Pick a site that receives at least six hours of sunlight. Add compost to the soil if it is in poor condition or does not drain well.

    • 2). Install a sturdy trellis for support. If planting so the vine will grow over a pergola or arbor, make sure the structure is strong and made from pressure-treated wood. To avoid damage to exterior siding and gutters, do not plant near houses or structures.

    • 3). Dig a hole that is as deep and two to three times wider than the container the wisteria is planted in. If planting more than one wisteria, space plants 10 to 15 feet apart.

    • 4). Remove the wisteria from the container and put the root ball of the plant into the prepared hole. Cover with the soil that was removed from the hole. Press the soil around the plant firmly with your hands to remove air pockets.

    • 5). Tie the wisteria to the support to train the vine where you want it to grow.

    • 6). Water the wisteria well after planting. The wisteria should receive at least 1 inch of water or rainfall each week until the plant is established. Once rooted, water only if leaves begin to wilt.

    • 7). Fertilize the plant annually, but only until it fills in the space. Since fertilizing is stimulating plant growth, you will not get any blooms. Stop fertilizing when you have the amount of vegetation required to cover your structure. Afterward, fertilize only if the leaf and stem turn yellow.
