Blair Fox Cellars
Blair Fox Cellars is one of the best combinations of high quality and low production wine found anywhere in the world, especially California.
With an annual production of around 500 cases and a small tasting room in the picturesque town of Los Olivos (about 30 miles northeast of Santa Barbara) Blair Fox has been a hit with critics and consumers alike.
The wine is focused on Rhone varietals with Syrah being the main attraction here.
Over the years University of California Davis trained winemaker Blair Fox (yes the winery carries his name) has been able to negotiate leases with some of the finest Syrah vineyards in and around Santa Barbara.
Of special interest to us was the Tierra Alta Vineyard from which Blair Fox also sources grapes to make a white wine, Viognier which is also outstanding.
Outside of the small production and outstanding wine (it makes sense to note that every bottle of wine made under the Blair Fox label received at least 90 points from famed wine critic Robert Parker) it is also nice to note that even outside of having his own name on the label, this is truly a family operation.
The tasting room boasts pictures of the families young child and Mrs Fox runs a large part of the back end of the winery including the website, billing and many other things.
For wine drinkers in an increasingly competitive marketplace, it's important to find quality wine at a fair price, but it is also important to find wineries which it is easy to want to support.
To me, this type of family owned winery is exactly the type of business which I am happy to support, especially when they are making a world class product.
