How to Build Interior Wood Shutters
- 1). Measure the width of the window from the right jamb to the left. Subtract 1/4-inch.
- 2). Divide this measurement by four. Each window requires four panels: two connected panels for the right side and two for the left.
- 3). Measure the height of the window and subtract 1/4-inch.
- 4). The frame of each panel should be about 1 1/2 inch in width. Subtract 3 inches from the individual panel width measurement to find the width required for the louvers/slats.
- 1). Cut 16 frame pieces, four per panel. Most wood will work, though it needs to be 1 1/2 inches wide. Use a mitered cut to create angled edges so the pieces fit nicely together.
- 2). Cut 100 louvers, 25 per panel, using a square cut. The wood needs to be 1 3/4 inches wide.
- 3). Cut 4 center wands to the height of the panels, minus 3 inches.
- 4). Measure 25 evenly spaced spots along the sides of each panel and mark with a pencil. This is where you’ll drill for the peg holes.
- 5). Drill holes the size of the pegs on each spot.
- 6). Use wood glue to attach the pegs to each louver, one on each end.
- 7). Glue the top frame pieces to the side frames once the louvers are attached.
- 8). Staple the center wand to the louvers.
- 9). Install two magnetic catches to each panel, one on the top and one on the bottom. Use screws to secure them.
