How do I Determine High Maintenance From Low Maintenance Ceramic Tile?

    • 1). Look at the tile selections you have a choice of. There are many factors that affect the choice, but ask about and think about maintenance. Some tiles require a sealer that must be maintained. If low maintenance is a criterion, you want to avoid these. Instead choose a tile with a hard glazed finish that will resist scratching. If used in a wet area, make sure it is slip resistant.

    • 2). Look at the grout selection that is appropriate for the tiles you are looking at. A pure white grout is going to be hard to keep clean and looking good. Try to choose a grout that complements the tile, but is darker and will not be as likely to show dirt and stains easily. Ask if a grout sealer is appropriate to help with maintenance later.

    • 3). Talk to the installer or salesperson at the tile store about maintenance. If there are things that will prevent or lessen maintenance that can be done at the time of installation, ask that these steps be done. This would include sealing the grout or putting extra sealer or a stronger sealer on the tile if it is necessary.
