How Far to Dig Up a Blueberry Bush?
- Blueberry plants have a shallow root system. The roots grow close to the soil surface, making it easy to dig the plant from the ground when transplanting. It is important to remove as much of the root ball as possible for success with transplanting.
- Dig around the blueberry plant in a 24-inch diameter and 12 to 18 inches deep. You will be able to see the root ball as you are digging deep, so you can adjust the depth as needed to remove as much of the root ball as possible. Wiggle the plant and root ball as you remove it from the ground to prevent snapping roots during the removal.
- Transplant the blueberry into a planting hole that is twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Amend the soil you dug from the ground with even amounts of compost. Pack the amended soil around the blueberry root ball to hold the plant in place.
