The reality is, free web traffic strategies can actually be just as effective and sometimes more effective than paying for ads or e-mail lists. The beauty of having an online business is that it is so cheap to operate and most marketing can be done completely for free. The only thing it will cost you is some of your time.
Here are some free ways to generate traffic to your website:
• Issue free press releases. Several online sites allow you to submit press releases and will distribute them for you online. They often have packages you can pay for that will, perhaps, give your press release more visibility, but the free press releases will work, especially if they're picked up by other websites. Holding a contest or offering something for free is almost guaranteed to get you extra mileage from your free press release.
• Article marketing. This can be one of the best tools for online business owners. Simply write an informative article pertaining to your business (not an advertisement) and submit it to one of the many online article directories. Your article will target your customers, may bring people directly to your website, and will help your website's visibility on search engines. Articles are recognized as "good content:" and will boost your website's SEO (search engine optimization).
• Social media. Use FaceBook, YouTube, and Twitter to promote your business. Come up with a daily tip or daily special and let your followers know about it. YouTube videos are terrific for SEO because Google and other search engines love them; with the right keywords, videos often trump other marketing efforts. If you use social media, use it. In other words, don't just open an account and think people will friend you magically. You have to be proactive, comment on your "friends" updates, etc. Be active and be involved if you want this to work. Plus, every time you issue a press release or article, post it to your FaceBook and Twitter account.

For example, if you sell a health supplements, you could blog about diet and exercise. It's not an ad—people won't return to your blog if it is—but rather an extra way to help your customers.
