When Should You Start College Dorm Shopping?

Many upcoming college freshman students wonder when they should start college dorm shopping. While it would seem after high school graduation is over you still have plenty of time to get ready for preparing for school in the fall, there are many benefits to getting an early start than waiting to the last minute.

While you wouldn't certainly want to start heading out to do your shopping the minute after your commencement ceremony, students who start early rather than procrastinating until the week before school begins can see many benefits.

Here are some reasons to get an early start:

More Selection: It is common for many stores to start selling school supplies as early as the end of late June. If you wait until the end of August, it is likely that many of the items that were available in June are now sold out.

More Time to Plan Ahead: You will want to make sure you take the time to plan ahead and make a list of all the things you need. The more time you give yourself, the better decisions you can make on what is really necessary and what would best represent your likes and preferences.

Save Money: When you properly plan and prepare, you can save much more money than if you are rushed and in a hurry with your move in date only a few days away. You can also take advantage of online sales and specials, since you will not have to worry about waiting for shipping.

Less Stress: There is nothing worse than being stressed out and trying to make decisions or pack or know you have a deadline. When you start shopping early, you can be confident that you will have everything you need ready to go and spend your last few weeks of summer vacation as you should be - relaxing and enjoying it!

While it is better to start sooner than later, there are a few things you will want to wait on purchasing however until you've received your room assignment and the contact details for your room mate. Many schools will give you this information at least 1-2 months in advance of the first day. These items would include: bedding, shared appliances such as refrigerator or microwave, and any decorative items or furniture pieces. While you should start comparison shopping early, it is best to speak to your room mate first to make sure you don't buy something they already have or choose a color that is going to clash terribly with their own likes.

It's an exciting time to be getting ready to start college - and getting that shopping done ahead of time will help you start the new experience without too much stress or expense.
