Chaparron Complex
Definition:
The Chaparron culture in the name given to a group of people who lived in sedentary villages of lower central America, especially Costa Rica, between about 1000-500 BC. Distinctive ceramic styles of the Chaparron include a zoned bi-colored pottery, with a hard, glossy red slip zoned set apart from a polished-brown or buff clay surface by widely incised lines. This design appears to suggest a connection with Formative or pre-Classic Mesoamerican ceramics.
The phase is most closely associated with archaeologist Michael J. Snarskis.
