    • 1). Connect a microphone with a 1/8- or 1/4-inch jack by checking on the front and back of your computer to see if you have a built in microphone port. The port is a small circular hole with a red- or pink-colored ring around the circumference. Most computers have a 1/4-inch port. Some newer computers may have 1/8-inch port. If your microphone doesn't have either of these jacks, you will need a microphone that connects via USB port. Plug the microphone cord into the computer. If your microphone plug isn't the right size, you can get an adapter. Some microphones come with adapters, which can sometimes affect the sound quality; therefore, it is best to find a microphone that fits into your computer. Once it is plugged into the jack, the microphone is ready to use.

    • 2). To connect a microphone with a USB cord, find an open USB port on your computer, and simply plug in the cord. The microphone is now ready to use.

    • 3). Test the microphone by clicking "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," "Entertainment" and "Sound Recorder." Push the "Record" button, and speak into the microphone. If the green line is moving up and down, your microphone is working.
