School is back in session, the weather is cooling and it’s the perfect time to go enjoy an event happening in Sacramento this month.
7th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival
Cesar Chavez Plaza, Sacramento
September 1, 12pm-8pm
This yearly event brings the sound and spirit of Mexican-Spanish traditions to life. Little Joe and his band La Familia is one of the celebrated modern artists of Tejano music, and has been awarded two Grammys.
Several other bands will be featured at the festival, which is appropriate for all ages. Tickets are $30 at the door, and children are admitted free. The Tejano Conjunto Festival is expected to sell out, so purchase your tickets in advance via their official website if possible.
Showstopper: Spoken Word Slam Competition
Underground Books, 2814 35th Street, Sacramento
Friday, September 6th, 6:30pm-9pm
This popular competition features original poetry by Sacramento locals. While any subject may be presented at the competition, many contestants are African-American and focus their work upon the issues and celebrations within their community. Tickets are $10 and the event runs from 6:30pm-9pm.
Great Train Robbery Train Ride
Sacramento RiverTrain, 400 N Harbor Blvd, West Sacramento
Saturday, September 7, 10am-1:30pm
Take a step back in time with an Old West open train ride that departs from West Sacramento. This three-and-a-half hour ride includes plenty of relaxation, but also a rogue outlaw or two!
Your onboard Marshall will protect you from the greedy outlaws and lead you out to a western barbecue lunch by the river. Bring your own blanket for this picnic-style meal and enjoy some time kicking back while learning about Sacramento’s exciting past. Tickets are $53 for adults, $28 for children aged 2-12.
Firefighter Chili Cook-Off
Safetyville USA, 3909 Bradshaw Road, Sacramento
Saturday, September 14, 12pm-4pm
Local fire departments descend upon Safetyville USA to show off their hottest, most delicious chili. Children can watch a helicopter landing, learn about rapelling, “Stop, Drop and Roll”, fire extinguisher use and more. The day also includes raffle prizes and giveaways, providing plenty of fun (and delicious lunch) for the entire family. Tickets are $5 general and children age 0-5 are free.
Center 5K Color Run & Kids Fun Run
Gibson Ranch, Elverta
Sunday, September 15, 9:30am-12pm
Center High School is hosting a color run to raise money for their athletic department. With food available for purchase, you can make a whole day out of supporting this local high school. All participants will receive a tshirt and complimentary water and fruit. The first man and woman to complete the race will receive a reward. Registration is $30 for adults, $10 for children.
Senior Tea & Tours
Sacramento Zoo, Sacramento
Monday September 9 & 16, 12pm
Exclusively for those over the age of 55, come enjoy the zoo on select Mondays in December. With various docents leading the way, you’ll enjoy a tour of the zoo and a tea break including various cold drinks, finger sandwiches, salad and cookies. Cost is $15 per person, and you must qualify as a senior to gain admittance.
Greek Myth Olympiaganza
Sacramento Theatre Company, 1419 H Street, Sacramento
September 18-22, times vary
Produced by the STC Young Professionals Conservatory, two narrators battle against each other in a quest to cover all of Greek mythology. To achieve this, there are plenty of theatrics, cross-dressing, audience participation and more. Famous myths covered at each performance include Pandora’s Box, Hercules and a musical version of the Iliad. These are just a few of the great Greek classics covered in a chaotic, crazy way that is sure to be hilariously entertaining.
Farm to Fork: Legends of Wine
California State Capitol – West Steps, Sacramento
Thursday, September 26, 6pm-8:30pm
The Legends of Wine event features two local wine experts who have received national recognition for their talents. Come out and taste great wines and cheeses, many of which are locally produced. This event is part of the inaugural Sacramento Farm to Fork series happening through the fall. Tickets are $50, ages 21+ only.
