Naturally Retro

• According to designer Jonathan Adler, the 1960s and '70s were the heyday for hippie-inspired, natural decorations. To create a bohemian table, choose placemats made of woven grass or a tablecloth of made from natural material. For napkins, use subdued tones such as brown or rust to give the table an earthy vibe. Decorate with handmade serving ware, and protect your table with earth-toned tile trivets. Set a ceramic vase in the center of the table, and fill it with seasonal flowers. Arrange decorative rocks and crystals in the center of the table.
  
  

1960's and 1970's Color

• To achieve a chic retro look, simply use colors that were in vogue during the 1960s and 1970s. Begin decorating the table with a harvest gold tablecloth. For napkins, choose a rich pumpkin shade. You can set off the gold and pumpkin shades with avocado green flatware. Use light brown for serving ware. For finishing touches, channel the '60's and '70's flower power colors: pink and orange. Madison Avenue

• Recapture the golden age of advertising with a table inspired by the men working on Madison Avenue in the '60s and '70s. On a neutral tablecloth, attach postcards or images of advertisements from these decades. Alternatively, choose a theme to centralize your advertisements, such as travel or soda ads. Set the table with 60's-inspired round tumblers or martini glasses. Arrange clear ashtrays around the table, and set tea lights in the center of each tray. Disco Decorations

• Though flowers and natural colors span both the '60s and '70s, disco is truly a '70's table theme. Start with a bold tablecloth, such as metallic silver or gold. For the table centerpiece, line a metal tray with disco balls from a local craft store. In the center of the table, scatter sequins and metallic confetti. To match the vibrant party vibe of the '70s, mix and match brightly colored glasses and plates. Change the bulbs of the light fixture nearest the table with colored bulbs from your local party supply store.
