How to Convert Square Feet Into Yards for Carpet
- 1). Measure the room size using the measuring tape or determine the the dimensions from the floor plan.
- 2). Multiply the room length and width to calculate the area in square feet. For example, the dimensions are 20 by 12 feet, then the area is 20 x 12 = 240 square feet.
- 3). Multiply the area by 0.1111 to convert it to square yards. In the example, the area of 240 square feet will converted to 240 x 0.1111 = 26.664 square yards.
- 4). Find out the the carpet width. This is typically listed in the material specification or on the package. For example, the width is 1 foot (12 inches).
- 5). Multiply the carpet width in feet by 0.3333 to convert it yards. In our example, the carpet width is 0.3333 x 1 = 0.3333 yards.
- 6). Divide the area in square yards by the carpet width to calculate yards of carpet required. In the example, the carpet length = 26.664 square yards / 0.3333 yards = 80 yards.
