How to Grip a Pencil

    • 1). Pinch the pencil with the tips of the thumb, index and middle finger. The index finger is right next to the thumb. The tips of the fingers should rest a couple inches above the end of the pencil and form a tripod position.

    • 2). Arrange the thumb so the pencil is resting against its pad. Continue to pinch the pencil with the tips of the middle and index fingers.

    • 3). Put an equal amount of pressure from all three fingers onto the pencil. This will help to ease stress on any one finger.

    • 4). Pull all fingers on the hand holding the pencil back into a fist. The three fingers indicated above should still be holding the pencil, so you will not be able to form an actual fist. Forming the movement on your hands helps to control the pencil and develop the motor skills needed to write with the pencil in this position.
