    • 1). Open a new file in Adobe Photoshop. Set the width and height settings to 128 pixels each.

    • 2). Click on the "Background" layer in the layer panel. Change the color to black.

    • 3). Select the "Ellipse" tool. Hold down the "Shift" key as you drag your cursor over the canvas to create a circle. Change the color of the circle to whatever you want your wave colors to be. Center the circle in the square canvas with the arrow keys on your keyboard.

    • 4). Select "Layer" in the menu bar. Select "Rasterize" then click on "Shape." In Photoshop, an object or layer has to be in raster form, as opposed to vector, in order to apply effects, such as painting or gradients, to it.

    • 5). Press "CTRL" and "C" then select the circle shape. Dancing dots will appear around the circle, indicating that a copy of the circle is selected. Click on the "Select" tab in the tool bar. Select "Modify" then choose "Contract." Enter a pixel amount to contract the circle. The less pixels you enter, the thinner the resulting circular line will be. The circular line is what will be the XMB wave. Try 7 pixels for now. Press "OK" then press "delete" to delete the inner circle, revealing the black background inside the outer circle.

    • 6). Select the "Gradient" tool. Check that the black gradient is 100 percent and the white gradient is 0 percent opacity. Select the "Radial Gradient" icon in the tool bar. Drop the radial gradient feature into the circle. Drag the cursor to the outside of the circle. Let go of the cursor to set the radial gradient.

    • 7). Press "File" then "Save." Save the file with a .targa extension into your TGA Wave folder. Close Photoshop.

    • 8). Navigate to your TGA Wave folder through your Windows Explorer. The TGA Wave Folder is located wherever you saved the TGA Wave application. Open the windows batch file by selecting"Start." Type in the name of your wave file into the Administrator Control Panel. Press any key to exit. This creates a system plug-in file with the same name as your targa file.

    • 9). Connect your PlayStation to your computer. Open the Recovery screen on the PlayStation. Click on "Advanced." This opens a pop-up window on your computer. Select "Open Folder To View Files." Double-click on the folders labeled "vsh" then "Resources." Drag the system plug-in file you made in Step 8 into the "Resources" folder. The next time you play on your PlayStation, the background will have the XMB wave you made.
