    Algebra

    • Getting students to solve algebraic equations is important in 10th grade. An example problem at this level might be to simplify this equation: 2(a -3) + 4b - 2(a - b -3) + 5. Students would multiply out the factors and then group similar terms together to get the answer of 6b + 5. Remind the students to work through the problem slowly and write down the whole process of working out the solution.

    Trigonometry

    • Trigonometry is a vital math topic for students to learn at 10th-grade level. Get students to find out the length of one side of a right triangle using the Pythagorean theorem concept of c^2 = a^2 + b^2. A good example may be: Find the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle with side lengths of 9.5 cm and 12 cm. The students should find that the length of the hypotenuse is 15.3 cm.

    Probability

    • Practicing probability not only in fractions, but also in decimals is good for preparing 10th-grade students for the curriculum in their future education. Get students to work through the problem thoroughly and put the probability in a fraction first before converting it to a decimal. A good example of a probability question would be: There are 24 ducks in a zoo. Ten of the ducks are black and the remaining ducks are white. Find the probability of white ducks in the zoo. The answer would be 0.58, converted from the fraction of 7/12.

    Money Math Problems

    • An understanding of managing and budgeting money is an important part of the math curriculum for 10th-graders. Money math problems help students to gain confidence with their finances, which is vital for preparing them not only for college, but also for their life outside of school. A good money math problem for 10th-grade level might be: Brendan goes on a trip to see a basketball game. He has $650 for the whole of the trip. He spends $40 on the tickets, $216 for two nights at a hotel, $329 for his flight and $29 for food. On his way to the game, he makes a bet of $5 in Black Jack in a casino and won money that was triple what he had left after making his bet. He then spent half of this money at the ball game. How much money does Brendan take home? The answer is $90.
