How do I Observe a Child on a Science Field Trip?
- 1). Label the first note with a child's name or initials, using a pen or pencil.
- 2). Watch the areas the child goes to during the field trip. Note specific areas of interest, or areas that yield an increase in questions from the child.
- 3). Write the observed information about the child on his or her piece of the notepad.
- 4). Move to the next child and write on another piece of the notepad. Repeat this method for each child and label each piece of notepad clearly with a child's name or initials.
- 5). After the field trip, organize the notes on a larger grid with each child's name. This will allow you to notice any patterns (e.g., four out of six children were interested in the fish), or to look for common questions among students. If you are collecting information only on individual students, place each child's note in their file and copy it into their records, or include the information on the child's next report card. The sticky note will help keep the information close at hand until you have time to type or write the information on a more permanent record.
