The Nature of Reality is Much Stranger Than You May Realize
If you've ever studied any of the sciences, there is a particular feeling of knowing when you discover the underlying reasons for something.
It's like when Dorothy discovered the Wizard behind the curtain pulling the strings, you get an insider's feeling of knowing when you realize how nature works.
I remember when I was a kid; I was fascinated by a normal, everyday door handle.
I would turn the knob, and the metal piece would retreat into the side of the door.
I would turn the knob again, and it would reappear, as if by magic.
Only when I was old enough, and had access to an old doorknob and the tools to disassemble it did I fully understand the mechanics inside.
Great men and women of science have always led the charge towards human discovery, but there is one thing they don't usually tell you in school.
One fact about science that they will never be able to fully answer.
And that is the never-ending "whys.
" No matter how many discoveries are made, no matter how technologically advanced we become, there will always, be another layer underneath that defies explanation.
Why do things fall to the earth? Because of gravity.
Why does gravity exist? Because there is an attractive force between objects that contain mass.
Why does that attractive force exist? Hmmm..
..
Let me get back to you.
Of course, the easy answer (and some say escape from rational thought,) is to simply say: "Because that is the way God made it.
" But does that satisfy everybody? Does that satisfy you? What is the underlying answer beneath everything if you are an atheist? Do the "whys" ever stop? Reality as we see it is a collection of measured experiences and over simplified explanations of the unexplainable.
In order to hang on to our sanity, we accept as truth the unobservable.
But do you want to know the real miracle of the universe? More than the deepest black hole, more the most complex wonders of physics, more than the most eloquently designed sea creatures that live fathoms below the surface of the deepest ocean? The real miracle is you.
Sitting right there, reading this, this collection of words and sentences and paragraphs, forming those thoughts in your head that are based on untold thoughts and experiences that came before them, and will undoubtedly influence the thoughts of many others.
How have you shared your miracle with others lately? Are you fully aware of the magnitude with which you can influence those around you? Are you fully aware the emotions and feelings you create in others simply by existing? Every day you are presented with countless opportunities to express yourself and to influence the thoughts of others, even causing a ripple effect through all of society.
What message do you want to send? What ideas to you want to spread? What feelings do you want to create? You are only limited by your imagination, as you realize how powerful you really are.
