How to Fix a Slow BT Broadband

    • 1). Check BT's Service Status page (see Resources section). Look for any reported outages or problems in your area. BT posts this information regularly, and an area problem can affect your broadband speed.

    • 2). Perform a speed test using the Speed Wizard (see Resources section). This will tell you how fast your connection is really performing and whether or not it is your equipment or the connection causing the issue. If the speed test shows a normal speed but your browsing is affected, the issue is likely caused by your computer. Remedies include clearing your Internet browser cache and cookies and checking your processor or memory. In addition, run a virus scan to rule out any malware or viruses.

    • 3). Verify that all connections are secure. Determine that the power supply to the BT Home Hub is correctly connected and that the Hub is connected to the wall socket securely. Verify that any Ethernet cables running to computers are intact and securely seated in their ports.

    • 4). Power cycle your equipment. Turn the computer, modem and router off and unplug for 60 seconds. Turn the modem, router and computer back on, in that order, to see if speed improves.

    • 5). Contact an engineer from BT if problems persist.
