How to Build Melamine Shelves
- 1). Draw two parallel vertical lines, each 5 feet long and 2 feet apart on your wall starting from the floor and going up the wall. Using a carpenter's level to draw each line. Level the carpenter's level so the bead floats in the center of the dial each time you draw the line. This will ensure the lines are perfectly straight and your shelves plumb.
- 2). Make four marks along each of the vertical lines, each one a foot apart starting at the top of each line. Drill out these marks with a 1/16-inch bit and power drill. Drill approximately 2 inches into the wall.
- 3). Insert plastic drywall anchors into each hole you just drilled and tap them in place with a small hammer.
- 4). Place an adjustable shelving bracket over each set of holes so the mounting holes in the bracket line up with the drywall anchors. Mount the brackets to the wall by screwing a 3-inch screw through the bracket and into each hole with a power screwdriver.
- 5). Attach a shelf hanger bracket to the adjustable shelving brackets. Install one every foot or so starting from the top. Place the brackets anywhere to accommodate the type of storage you need.
- 6). Cut the two, 8-foot sheets of half-inch-by-12-inch melamine board into four, 3-foot sections (or however wide you want to make them) with a table saw. Install the boards on the brackets to create your shelves.
