DIY Paint Booth

    Planning

    • Decide on a scale for your paint booth based on the size of your projects. Remember to account for the space needed for the painter and equipment, along with the object to be painted. You can construct paint booths in existing spaces like a basement, garage or barn. If more space is needed, consider building a paint booth outdoors.

    Framing

    • Construct the paint booth frame using lightweight PVC piping. PVC is flexible, easy to cut, and readily available at hardware stores. Use cross braces and PVC connectors to build a free-standing frame that is sturdy but has large enough openings for entering and exiting.

    Siding

    • To seal off the paint booth, use transparent plastic drop cloths. This will allow natural light into the booth while containing the fumes. Use duct tape to attach the drop cloths to the PVC frame. Leave the plastic drop cloth on one side loose so it can be rolled back to serve as an entrance to the booth.

    Ventilation

    • A paint booth will also need a ventilation system. Cut away part of one of the walls and use duct tape to affix a box fan, positioned so it will point outward. On the opposite wall cut a hole of similar size and tape a cotton bed sheet over the hole. This will serve as a filter for air entering the booth. Before painting, dampen the sheet with a spray bottle of water. This will collect dust that could damage wet paint.
