How to Clean Fresh Squid
- 1). Fill a container with water. Stack the squid together in a pile so that they are easy to reach. Place a smooth cutting board on the work surface. Discard any squid that have bodies peeling away from the tentacles or squid with dark bodies or tentacles.
- 2). Cut the tentacles off the main body, just above the squid's eye. Put your finger between the tentacles and push the mouth out from the tentacles. Pull the mouth away and discard.
- 3). Hold the tentacles in one hand. Use your thumb to hold the tentacles securely in place. Run one fingernail from your other hand down the length of the tentacles one at a time. This removes the hard rings around the tentacles.
- 4). Rinse the tentacles in the pan of water. Remove any dirt or hard pieces from the tentacles.
- 5). Pull the inside of the squid's head from the tube around its body. Pull the bone out of the body after removing the head. Discard the head and bone.
- 6). Run your thumbnail down the length of the tube to loosen the skin. Gently peel the rest of the skin off the squid tube to remove it completely. Rinse the tube in the water. Keep the pieces in the water until you are ready to cook them.
