Are you trying to figure out how to crate train a puppy? Good, you have come to the right place.
I would like to be the first person to congratulate you on the new addition to your family! Learning how to crate train a puppy sounds like a daunting task but there are only a few simple steps that you need to take to get the task at hand done.
First, do not buy the biggest crate you can find.
The reasoning is simple, dogs are fairly clean animals, they will not pee and poop where they sleep.
If you buy a crate that is huge and you have a tiny puppy, your puppy will use part of the crate to pee and poop and the other part to sleep.
A crate should only be big enough for your puppy to sit, stand, turn around and lay down in.
Second, when you bring the crate home, let your new puppy find it on his own.
He will smell it and wonder what it is.
When he does, give him a treat and praise him.
He will like that.
He will feel good about being near it.
Once he is okay with being near it, try to lure him into it with a treat.
If he likes the treats he will walk right in.
When he walks in, praise him again.
There is no need to treat him again because he just got his treat by going in.
Third, when he is okay with going in and sniffing around, slowly and calmly close the gate on the crate.
He will probably hear it shut and turn around to see whats going on, stay calm and give him a treat.
After he goes back to sniffing around, calmly leave the room.
He will probably bark at you, but just keep going.
He will be fine! Come back some time later, give him a treat and let him out!
