How to Transplant Indoor Palm Trees

    • 1). Lay the palm tree pot on its side and use your hands to gently dig out the soil around the base of the plant. Do not try to remove all of the soil from the root ball. Instead, just loosen the soil so that a large amount of soil comes out of the pot along with the roots. Do not pull out on the tree trunk as this will damage the roots.

    • 2). Pour one to two cups of water over the roots of the palm tree and then apply a light layer of mycorrhizal fungi to the roots. Mycorrhizal fungi helps to prevent the palm tree from going into shock during transplanting and is available at most garden supply stores and nurseries.

    • 3). Choose a new pot in which to transplant the palm tree. Select a pot that is twice as wide as the base of the root system of the plant. Also make sure that the pot has drainage holes in the bottom so that the roots of the tree will not sit in water.

    • 4). Fill the bottom of the new pot with 2 to 3 inches of gravel to provide for ample drainage. Then fill the reminder of the pot with an all-purpose potting soil until it reaches approximately 1 to 2 inches below the top of the pot.

    • 5). Dig a hole in the center of the potting soil with your hands, or a garden spade. Insert the palm tree into the hole and cover the roots with soil. Make sure that the entire trunk of the palm tree is above the surface of the soil. Place an additional ring of potting soil on top of the existing soil around the base of the plant. This soil ring creates a trench which will hold water.

    • 6). Water the palm tree thoroughly by pouring water near the base of the trunk inside the soil trench. Continue watering until the water runs out of the bottom of the pot.

    • 7). Insert fertilizer stakes into the surface of the soil spaced at 4 to 5 inches around the pot.

    • 8). Place the pot in a location that receives plenty of sunlight.
