Sight is one of the ways through which we interact with our world. Imagine an hour when your eyes suddenly lose their ability to see people and things around.

We just cannot imagine not being able to see. And though eyes are such precious, most of us never bother to get them tested and take treatment if necessary.

This carelessness on our part contributes to the damage our eyes go through; there have been many cases where the loss to the sight could have been prevented had the patients sought appropriate treatment.

Glaucoma is one such group of eye conditions that affect a large population in India. And a large part of this affected population ends up with extremely blur vision and sometimes total vision loss because they either did not take any treatment or approached the doctors when it was too late.

Herein this article, we will try to understand Glaucoma better, and the ways we can prevent it from causing severe vision loss.

First things first, we need to understand what is Glaucoma?

Simply defined, Glaucoma is a set of eye conditions that primary damage the optic nerve that acts as the bridge for the visual information to travel between retina and brain.

Glaucoma is caused by high intraocular pressure which eventually compresses the optic nerve and makes the cells in the nerve die down.

The role eye tests play in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma

Since you may not notice any signs of glaucoma until it has reached an advanced state, it is important that you get your eyes tested regularly.

Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent and/or limit the damage to the eyes caused by Glaucoma.

Your doctor may perform several tests to diagnose glaucoma, including:

Measuring intraocular pressure with Tonometry apart from reviewing your medical history, your doctor would first measure the intraocular pressure in your eyes with a test named Tonometry. Its a simple and painless procedure and considered the initial screening test for glaucoma.

Test for optic never damage the eye specialist doctor in India may leverage modern instruments to look for the signs of optic nerve damage. The test would help him see the slight changes that might indicate the growth of glaucoma.

Visual field test to determine whether the glaucoma has affected your visual field, the eye doctor may conduct a test to evaluate your side or peripheral vision.

Visual acuity this is a test to evaluate your ability to see from a distance.

Measuring cornea thickness your eyes are likely to be numbed for conducting this test in which the thickness of your corneas are determined, which is an important factor in diagnosing glaucoma.

Treatments and drugs

The purpose of the treatments would be to lower the pressure inside your eyes (intraocular pressure). Medicated eye drops are often prescribed to lower down the pressure. The eye specialist doctor in India may suggest some oral medications. In case eye drops and medications turn out ineffective, you may be asked for undergoing a surgical procedure.

Were almost done here. But we again want to reiterate the importance of regular eye tests. These tests are going to help you spot eye diseases when they are still in their early stages; and this is the time when they are easy to treat. So wed suggest you to visit a nearby glaucoma clinic or your eye doctor so he/she can help you understand the frequency of tests you should opt for.
