  Canton, with about 4,000 residents, is 13 miles west of Asheville, North Carolina. The city is on the banks of the Pigeon River, which is lined with 1 1/2 miles of trails. Golfers can enjoy the nine-hole Tree Golf Course or take on the championship course at Springdale Country Club. In fact, six golf courses in Haywood County lure visitors from all over the country. There are no hotels in Canton, but you'll find plenty in Waynesville, about seven miles away.

• This bed and breakfast has been totally restored, assuring you of a relaxing stay. Each of the six rooms has limited amenities, but there is cable television and plenty of space for your belongings. A full breakfast is included, served formally on bone china and on a table with a white tablecloth adorned with a candle and freshly cut flowers. Walk to quaint galleries, shops and restaurants in downtown Waynesville.
