How to Cut & Install Granite Tile
- 1). Lay the granite tiles on the surface you want to cover and determine which pieces need to be cut. Use a lead or grease pencil to mark the areas to cut.
- 2). Place a tile you want to cut on the sliding saw bed of the diamond wet saw, against the fence. Align the diamond blade with the cutting mark. Turn on the saw and wait for water to cover the blade. Place your hands on both sides of the cutting line and feed the granite tile into the blade.Slide the table back toward you until you clear the tile of the blade. Repeat with all the tiles you need to cut.
- 3). Lay a crack-isolation fabric on the flooring to prevent any cracks in the finished granite from spreading.
- 4). Use a notched trowel to spread cement-based thinset mortar on the surface. A notched trowel has indentations in its edges to help with thinset application. The strong thinset adhesive will bond the granite tiles to the surface.
- 5). Lay the granite tiles on the thinset mortar, leaving even gaps about 1/8 inch between tiles. Approximate the spacing or use plastic spacers between tiles.
- 6). Spread grout on the granite tiles and use a grout float to force the grout into the tile joints. Wipe the tile surface with a damp sponge to remove excess grout. Let the grout dry overnight.
