In the early 12th century, Augustinian canons established a priory at St. Andrews, and a cathedral was constructed sometime before 1144. A larger cathedral was begun in 1160, and was eventually consecrated in 1318. The cathedral at St. Andrews measured 357 feet in length and was the largest church in Scotland. It incorporated both Norman and Gothic styles.
In 1559, at the height of the Reformation, the cathedral was plundered and abandoned.

It fell into disrepair and became a source for building materials.
