How to Remove an Old Protective Coating
- 1). Wash the floor with warm water and a mild detergent to remove any dust, dirt and debris prior to applying the stripping compound. This makes the coating easier to remove, since dirt could interfere with the stripper reacting with the coating.
- 2). Apply a stripping chemical to the surface with a mop or a sprayer. Check the container to ensure the chemical is designed for the surface you are using on it on, whether it be concrete, laminate, wood or another material.
- 3). Scrub the surface with either a mop for horizontal surfaces, or a large sponge for a vertical surface, to remove the stripper as well as the protective coating.
- 4). Rinse the surface with regular water and dry with a towel. Reapply the stripping compound if you have additional coating that needs to be removed.
