    Rules

    • To maintain order, the teacher should establish a set of rules. Post these rules in the classroom so the pupils are constantly reminded of them. The rules may include asking the teacher's permission before leaving the classroom, raising a hand to ask questions, not talking with other pupils and being quiet while class is in session. It's important to be consistent in enforcing the rules.

    Kindness and Affection

    • Elementary school children also need kindness and affection. Pupils fear, not respect, the habitually angry teacher. To command respect, teachers need to be kind, loving and understanding toward pupils. A little flexibility in enforcing class rules is also important, because this helps the pupils trust and respect the teacher. When students learn to respect their teacher, behavioral problems in the class gradually start vanishing on their own.

    Rewards and Reinforcement

    • Classroom rewards play a significant role in helping to manage an elementary class. Rewards inspire pupils to obey the rules and behave well. Teachers can reward them through small gestures such as letting them be first in a line, allowing them do all the class jobs for the day, giving them extra recess, letting them use the computer and giving them small prizes. Children love attention, and such rewards work as incentives for other pupils to show positive behavior.

    Punishments

    • It's also important to decide on punishments for those who break the class rules. Fear of punishment makes children want to do what the teacher asks them to do. Punishments may include no recess, extra homework, standing outside the class and warnings. In severe cases, teachers can arrange a meeting with the principal or call the parents at home.
