Once the shock and pain of a breakup wears off a bit, you may find that you are still longing to be with your ex regardless of what drove the two of you apart.
Yet approaching your ex and trying to find out if he still wants to be with you and give your relationship another shot is just too much for some people to risk.

If your ex wants you back, his friends are going to know about it and you can find out.
You may have to listen for some hints or indirect references from his friends if they are particularly good at protecting their friend's true feelings, but as long as you pay attention you should be able to hear what you are looking for.
