How to Trim Out a Closet Door
- 1). Measure across the top horizontal section of the door opening, at the very edge of the casing (the closest part of the wall to the door), going from the top left corner to the top right corner. Mark out the measurements on the lower edge of a piece of flat trim molding, leaving at least six inches of space beyond each of the marks.
- 2). Lay the molding on a miter saw, face up, with marked bottom edge facing the saw blade. Position the trim with one of the lines directly under the blade. Turn the blade 45 degrees pointing away from the measured section of the trim. Start the saw, and cut the piece.
- 3). Move the molding to position the other mark under the blade. Turn the 45 degrees in the opposite direction as it was during the first cut. Cut the trim. The bottom edge of the trim should be the size of your measurement, with the top edge longer.
- 4). Position the trim along the top of the door where you measured. The bottom edge of the trim should match the span of the doorway with the two ends of the piece angling out and up over each corner.
- 5). Nail the trim to the wall using your trim nailer. Shoot in a nail about every foot along the top and bottom edges of the trim.
- 6). Follow the same procedure to measure and cut the side pieces for the door, except cut the bottom ends of the pieces straight across (at 90 degrees on the saw). The top ends of both pieces should be 45 degrees and will form the corners with the 45-degree angles of the top span.
