How to Plant Zoysa Grass
- 1). Prepare the soil. If there is existing grass or weeds, kill it by spraying herbicide.
- 2). Use a rototiller to till 6 to 8 inches of soil, and smooth with a rake. Remove the dead grass, weeds and stones using a shovel or hoe.
- 3). Use a broadcast spreader to spread 1-2-1 fertilizer throughout the area at a rate of 1 lb. per 1,000 square feet of planting area. Smooth the entire area with a rake.
- 4). Break the Zoysa sod into 5-square-inch sprigs. Make sure there are at least two roots, stems and leaves on each sprig. Keep the sprigs damp until planting.
- 5). Use a hoe to make furrows 2 inches deep and 6 inches apart in the entire planting area.
- 6). Plant the sprigs 6 inches apart in the furrows. Cover each sprig with soil so that at least one root is 2 inches deep and at least one stem is above ground.
- 7). Keep the entire area thoroughly watered for the first three weeks after planting. Zoysa grass is normally drought resistant but requires moist soil while it is being established.
