How to Make a Wooden Medicine Cabinet
- 1). Set the dado blade of your drop saw to cut ¾ inch wide and deep. Make four cuts along the 18-by-5 planks, two on each end, and two sixth inches apart along the length, dividing the 18-inch length equally. These will be the recesses where the top, bottom and shelves slide into the sides of the medicine cabinet. Repeat on the second 18-by-5-inch plank.
- 2). Sand all of your wood with the sander.
- 3). Fit a 15-by-5-inch plank into the recesses at one end of the side planks, for the top of the cabinet. Make sure the corners are at right angles, and the edges flush. Glue the joint, then hammer a nail every inch through the glued joint, from the sides of the 18-by-5-inch plank, into the end of the 15-by-5-inch plank. Repeat with a second 15-by-5-inch plank at the bottom recess, then with the two middle recesses, for the shelves.
- 4). Place the side with the least attractive wood surface facing upward; this will be the back of the cabinet. Position one of the wood slabs over the frame of the cabinet, making the edges and corners flush. Glue and hammer the slab down for the back of the cabinet, one nail every few inches through the glued joint.
- 5). Position the piano hinge along the edge of the 18-inch side of the remaining slab, which will be the cabinet door. The hinge should run the length of the slab. Screw the hinge down. Position the door over the open face of the cabinet, making sure it is centered and flush at the edges, then screw in the remaining portion of the hinge to the cabinet side with a screwdriver to attach the door.
- 6). Sand any remaining rough patches, then varnish as desired, following the varnish label's recommended drying times.
- 7). Position the cabinet handle around two inches in from the side opposite the hinge, on center. Screw it in through the back of the door.
