How to Deposit a Check Into a Bank Account
- 1). Turn the check over to endorse it.
- 2). Write the words "For deposit only" on the back of the check within the lines provided for writing. This creates a "restrictive endorsement" that prevents anyone from simply cashing the check. A restrictive endorsement is optional, but it can prevent the cashing of a lost or stolen check.
- 3). Sign your name on the back of the check as it appears on the front of the check.
- 4). Present the endorsed check at the bank along with a deposit slip for the bank account. Enter the check amount in the blank fields of the deposit slip.
- 1). Endorse the check using a "restrictive endorsement" ("for deposit only") with your signature.
- 2). Scan your ATM card at an ATM that serves your bank.
- 3). Select the "deposit" option by pushing the appropriate button.
- 4). Feed the check into the ATM machine according to the guidelines provided by the machine.
- 5). View the ATM screen to verify the check scanned properly. Examine the amount on the scanned check for accuracy.
- 6). View the total deposit amount on the ATM screen to ensure accuracy. If you notice an error, most ATMs feature an override option that enables you to correct the error.
- 7). Approve the deposit after you ensure accuracy. Choose the option that provides you with a printed receipt to serve as your deposit receipt.
