What is the Definition of a Nylon Ripstop?

104 5

    Conventional Nylon

    • Nylon coated with polyurethane replaced cotton canvas for outdoor use, but the fabric had a tendency to rip through from a puncture or tear. Also, the plastic coating would wear off with use.

    Fabric Reinforcement

    • The threads in ripstop nylon run closely together along its length and width, a grid pattern that prevents tearing through the fabric. The threads are heavier than those found in other nylon products.

    Additional Advantages

    • Ripstop doesn't weigh much and you can easily treat it with water repellent applications.

    Disadvantages

    • Ripstop in lighter weights does not resist abrasion and exposure to sunlight as well as pack cloth polyester. Also, if you do not dry it thoroughly before storing it, it may mildew.

    Popularity

    • Ripstop nylon has replaced conventional coated nylon for outdoor use. You can easily find clothes, tents, tarps, daypacks, and backpacks made of ripstop nylon.
